5 tips on how to deal with choosing a mattress

18. August 2021 How to choose a mattress

Are you considering changing the mattress and are you hesitant to choose? The offer is wide and it is not at all easy to get acquainted with it.
That is why we have prepared a list of 5 questions for you, which you should answer before you decide on a given mattress.

5 tips on how to deal with choosing a mattress
1. Mattress size

How big of a mattress do you need?

Mattress length

For a comfortable sleep , your mattress should be at least 20 cm longer than your height. And although most of us are used to a length of up to 200 cm from the past, today it is no longer a problem to get mattresses 220 cm long or more. If nature has blessed you with above-average height, get a mattress on which you can sleep even without your feet in the air.

The width of the mattress

The width of the mattress for a double bed should be at least 80 cm for one person. But if the space allows, choose even wider - every cm can make a big difference. If it is an occasional sleepover, you can get by with a width of 70 cm per person. In the case of a single bed , the width of the bed should not be less than 90 cm.

Mattress height

Many people think that the higher the mattress, the more comfortable it is. But this is a myth and a marketing move by companies that force customers to buy more expensive higher mattresses. Athletes and active people will generally be more comfortable with a lower mattress , preferably one that is closely linked to the orthopedic lamella system . The mattress will thus breathe perfectly and dissipate excess heat. With increasing weight and age, choose a higher mattress. A higher mattress distributes weight better and captures more basal heat, which is produced less in the elderly than in younger people.

2. Bed slats

What kind of grate do you have?

Although you will never hear this question from many salespeople, the answer to it is crucial. In order to have a good night's sleep, you need to follow a simple rule: " Let the bed frame or the mattress spring, not both ".

Therefore, if you choose a slatted or segmented grid, it is advisable to get a simple mattress without spring elements. Alternatively, ask about the possibility of reinforcing it so that it can be used with the grate. We will be happy to adjust your mattress free of charge so that its correct orthopedic function is preserved.

Those who choose a fixed grate are at an advantage. Any mattress can be placed on it. The ideal combination is then a solid grid with a flexible mattress. These include spring mattresses or mattresses with an integrated slatted grid .

If you want to buy an adjustable bed frame, make sure that the mattress you choose is suitable for it. In general, lower mattresses, up to a height of 22 cm, are better suited. In any case, consider using a holder to prevent the mattress from sliding unintentionally on the slat.

3. Physical disposition

What is your character?

Although most manufacturers provide information on what weight category a given mattress is suitable for, this is simplified information. It actually depends on the pressure you put on the mattress. And this is determined not only by your weight, but also by your height and build.

Our advice is " as the proportion of muscle mass increases, choose a harder mattress ". If you are a muscular person, you will probably feel better on a firmer mattress. If you don't like to move, you will sleep better on a softer mattress.

4. Health

Are you suffering from any health problems?

A mattress can help you with some health problems. However, if you choose it wrong, the result will be the exact opposite. First of all, try to consult your doctor or, for example, a physiotherapist, especially if it concerns more serious health problems.
If you are not receiving treatment anywhere, we have simple advice for you. If you suffer from joint pain, degenerative spine damage, pressure sores or venous problems, choose a mattress with a layer that distributes point pressure well. As a rule, these are higher and softer mattresses. Try memory foam or natural latex, or soft PUR foam. Hard mattresses will be completely unsuitable for you.
If you suffer from common back pain , you will benefit your body best with a mattress with a lower and firmer layer of surface foam. Spreading the pressure with e.g. memory foam is rather undesirable in this case, on the other hand, a solid mattress on which there will be no problem to change position at any time will do you a good job.
But always keep in mind that the mattress must first of all allow the spine to relax. So choose one that will keep your spine in its physiological position.

5. Allergies

Are you allergic?

If your answer is "yes", then always choose a mattress with an easily removable, washable cover . If you are directly allergic to dust mites, make sure that the cover is washable at least at 60°C . Allergens can be partly removed by regular vacuuming, but a washing machine will provide you with a much better service. Washing also removes sweat and other organic impurities that create an environment suitable for mites and mold.
